Who Is Eligible to Take the Bar Exam? Is a Bachelor’s Degree Sufficient?

Anyone who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law or an equivalent academic qualification is eligible to take the Bar Exam. Therefore, you do not need to wait until you complete a Master’s degree to sit the exam.

Final-year law students may also take the exam, provided they submit an official document from their university confirming that they are expected to receive the relevant academic degree.

How Do You Register for the Bar Exam?

Registration for the Bar Exam is completed entirely online through a dedicated examination portal.

To register, candidates must create a personal account, upload the required documents, and pay the exam fee of GEL 250.

Registration takes place in two stages:

Stage 1 – The candidate registers for the exam and selects their preferred specialization.

Stage 2 – Once registration is complete, candidates are given the opportunity to select an examination session. As a rule, three different sessions are available, and candidates may choose the date that suits them best.

If a candidate does not select a session within the specified period, the system will automatically assign them to a session with available places.

Please note that if you complete all stages of registration but fail to attend the exam, the examination fee is non-refundable.

After completing each stage of registration, candidates receive a notification by email, SMS, and through their personal account on the examination portal.

What Specializations Are Available?

During registration, candidates choose the specialization in which they wish to take the Bar Exam.

The exam is offered in three specializations:

  • Civil Law
  • General Law
  • Criminal Law

Choosing the appropriate specialization is important, as the exam questions are determined according to the selected field.

What Is the Format of the Bar Exam?

The Bar Exam is conducted entirely on a computer and consists of 100 multiple-choice questions.

Throughout the exam, the remaining time is continuously displayed on the screen. The system also uses different colors to distinguish between answered and unanswered questions, allowing candidates to easily return to questions they have skipped.

Candidates may return to any question at any time before submitting the exam.

Since bringing paper into the examination room is prohibited, an electronic notes section is provided below each question, allowing candidates to make any necessary notes.

How Long Does the Exam Last?

The exam lasts 6 hours.

During this period, candidates are permitted to leave the examination room only twice.

The following are prohibited during the exam:

  • Bringing in legislative or other legal materials;
  • Using a mobile phone or any other electronic device;
  • Bringing in paper or pens.

Candidates are required to bring only a valid identification document.

Late arrival is permitted only within the officially established time limit. However, no additional time is granted for late arrival, and the exam ends at the same time for all candidates.

What Score Is Required to Pass the Bar Exam?

To successfully pass the Bar Exam, candidates must score at least 75 points.

The result is available immediately after completing the exam, so candidates do not have to wait several days or weeks to find out whether they have passed.

What Happens After Passing the Bar Exam?

If you successfully pass the Bar Exam and wish to become a licensed attorney, the next step is to complete the Professional Adaptation Program of the Georgian Bar Association.

The program lasts one year and consists of two parts:

  • 3 months of theoretical training (online);
  • 9 months of practical training with a mentor attorney.

The fee for the theoretical component is GEL 750, while the practical training with a mentor is free of charge.

Candidates who score between 97 and 100 points on the Bar Exam are exempt from paying the fee for the theoretical component of the Professional Adaptation Program.
